On 18th October 2017, the Queensland Government’s Department of Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning announced its approval and preliminary approval of grant funding of more than $7.709 million for North West Queensland projects through the Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program (LGGSP).
McKinlay Shire Council was successful in securing a total of $797,985 from the State Government for the construction of additional council staff housing. The funding will cover 60% of the total project cost of $1,366,732. McKinlay Shire Council will fund the balance of the project expenses.
The funding will support the construction of two four-bedroom houses, and two two-bedroom units in Julia Creek. It is expected that this project will be completed by April 2019.
“The construction of four new dwellings will not only address the staff housing shortfall but it will also create jobs and boost economic activity for our Shire,” McKinlay Shire Council Mayor, Belinda Murphy said.
Local Government Minister, Mark Furner said, “We have given councils two financial years to deliver projects and this has allowed councils to apply for projects which will truly have an enduring impact in their communities.”
“It has also enabled councils to plan their workforces ahead of time, to create local jobs and give the local economy a shot in the arm,” Minister Furner added.
